Electric car charging in residential developments

Following on from our posts about reducing your carbon footprint when driving, take a look at a new initiative about electric cars currently running in America.  It’s great to see residential developments incorporating green initiatives into their plans.  In this case they have gone above and beyond the normal tactics by including transport initiatives.  Maybe Britain will follow soon….

Gentlemen, Charge Your Engines!: Aqua Becomes First Residential Development to Offer Electric Car Charging Stations

Both the city of Chicago and its mayor are excited about a cutting-edge green initiative that Aqua will offer its residents: electric car charging stations and the public. Aqua will be the first residential development to offer a service like the one it will provide. Magellan Development instituted many green initiatives when developing the new mixed-use tower, but the car charging stations are one of the most innovative and exciting features.

The six public stations will be able to charge 24 cars simultaneously and are located in the garage of Aqua. Charging an electric car on these stations, which costs approximately $5 in energy costs, will allow an electric car to drive approximately 250 miles.

In a demonstration hosted by Magellan and attended by Mayor Daley, an I-GO Car Sharing Prius was charged at the Aqua charging station. Magellan partnered with Carbon Day Automotives, a Chicago company using the Coulomb Technologies ChargePoint Network of electric charging stations, to create the Aqua charging stations. As nearly every automotive manufacturer has announced plans to develop an electric model or hybrid model, the electric charging stations in Aqua allow for the whole city of Chicago to start to participate in the green movement in the future. The charging station amenities at Aqua make it a great place to live for those already owning an electric vehicle.

Mayor Daley joined the demonstration event to take part in the achievement for the city of Chicago. What Magellan and Aqua have done for the city has been called “an impressive prototype for the kind of sustainable-energy infrastructure.” Chicago was awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2009 Clean Cities Petroleum Reduction Technologies grant program; with $15 million allocated to this purpose, the development of green initiatives like this one will hopefully be an integral part of all Chicago developments in the near future.

Author Sig: Magellan Development, a premier developer of Chicago condos for sale, is committed to creating urban communities that blend striking and innovative architecture with top quality, environmentally-friendly construction. Designing communities in prime locations in the city, Magellan Development anticipates the needs and exceeds the expectations of valued residents and commercial clients.

Car share schemes take off as councils get on board

This week saw the launch of designated car share scheme places in local car parks.  For the first time councils are offering designated parking spaces for those car sharing.  Councils have linked up with local car share schemes to offer the places.

Not only does car sharing help the environment by cutting down on the number of cars on the road but it also helps the wallet.  By car sharing it eliminates the need to own a car or at the very least cuts down on the amount of money spent on petrol.  We all know how much petrol costs these days!

So why not get in touch with your local council or check out your local car share scheme and see if you can cut your CO2 emissions and save money this year.  liftshare offer a car share scheme.  Their web address is www.liftshare.com

Go Green on June 9th with National liftShare day

nlsd-logo-2009-outline.gif

liftShare is an up and coming site helping to make us a greener nation.  Recently liftShare has had a lot of positive publicity as not only do they help reduce your carbon footprint but they also help you save money on your journeys.

June 9th sees the first National Liftshare day so if you want a sociable way to save reduce local congestion and pollution – and save yourself money – check outwww.liftshare.com

Car-sharing is taking off in the UK: over 330,000 people have already joined the (free) liftshare network. You can either offer a lift, request a lift, or take turns driving. There are tens of thousands of journeys on liftshare’s database which people want to share, so the odds are that someone who lives near you is also going your way…

The typical commuter who car-shares every day cuts their CO2 emissions by about a tonne a year. And for every driver that starts car-sharing, another car is taken off the roads. It’s also great for bringing communities together – friendships are made that last long after the car-sharing arrangement is no longer needed.

Tuesday 9 June is National liftshare Day – what better day to give it a try?

Grants for electric cars

Today the UK Government announced plans to give grants of up to £5000 towards electric cars.  These grants won’t be available until 2012 and as yet there is no indication as to what the average contribution will be.  The Government is also pledging £20 million for recharging points. Again there is no indication as yet as to where these will be but Ethical and Green think they’ll mostly be in major cities.

These latest plans are yet more evidence of how the Government are trying to get the UK green.  However they are just token gestures and not likely to really change the lifestyles of UK residents.  At the moment people are more worried about keeping their jobs than getting excited about grants that may happen in years to come.  Until there is action the government are just giving us soundbites to tick boxes on their policies.

On a positive note more car companies are releasing electric cars.  They are becoming more stylish, practical and affordable.  If people can be encouraged to ditch petrol cars we’ll be making great progress to reducing CO2 emissions and going carbon neutral.

Cut your carbon footprint with liftshare

Something is happening in the world of car-sharing: drivers are no longer happy to sit in traffic jams, surrounded by other single-occupancy vehicles, and more of them than ever have been signing up to car-sharing schemes. The environmental and financial benefits are making it an increasingly mainstream form of transport.

In fact, by the end of January, over 300,000 people will have registered with liftshare,  the UK’s largest scheme – with about 300 new members signing up to the free network every day. But does it really make a genuine difference to how green your lifestyle is?

Well consider this: in 2005, over 60% of cars on the UK’s roads had only one occupant (among commuters, that figure was 85%). Overall, our average occupancy level is 1.6 people per car. In 1965, that figure was 2. Not such a big drop, you may think. Until you realise that it results in literally millions of empty car seats on the UK’s roads every single day.

If occupancy levels only increased back from 1.6 to two, nine million tonnes of CO2 would be saved per annum. The potential environmental impact of car-sharing is enormous.

Indeed, it would surprise many people to learn that a fully-occupied car is as environmentally friendly as public transport. If the UK is to enable maximum mobility while still aspiring to achieve its Kyoto commitments, it is essential that we acknowledge the car’s ability to provide one of the greenest forms of motorised transport – when used correctly.

Members of liftshare are currently taking 40,000 cars off the road every day, sharing about 70 million miles per year. And many of them are doing it for environmental reasons, knowing that the typical commuter who car-shares with just one other person every day saves one tonne of CO2 a year.

Finding someone to share your journey with is very straightforward. Just register your details and your journey on the free website, liftshare.com, and then do a search for people going the same way as you. The journey-matching success rate is increasing all the time as the number of registered journeys grows, and new members are often surprised at how quickly they find someone to share with.  liftshare is a social enterprise so is not a company concerned with making money.  Any profits made are put straight back into the business.

But perhaps you’re one of the lucky ones, and are already in a position to take the even greener option of walking or cycling to work. If so, you might have been put off by the idea of doing it alone – especially in the darker months.

If you want to give it a go, but would prefer a bit of company to brighten that journey, liftshare also has a smaller but growing membership of their BikeBUDi.com and WalkBUDi.com sites, which are worth investigating. Again, membership is completely free – you just register your journey, and see if someone else is walking or riding the same way.

With any of the three sites, it only takes a few moments to sign up, and it could have more benefits than you ever imagined…!

Greener driving- how to reduce your CO2 emissions

A while ago we looked at green cars and how engines are being modified to run on biofuels and alternative sources of fuel.  However, not all of us (me included) have a car that has low CO2 emissions so what can you do to keep emissions lower without having to fork out for a new car?  The obvious answer is to leave the car at home and use public transport or cycle/walk to your destination.  This is great but what if you need your car for work?  Thankfully some companies such as PwC have low CO2 emission company cars but this is not the norm.

If you want to reduce CO2 emissions whilst you are driving here are a few tips from the UK Government about driving efficiently.  When fuel prices are so high this is useful for everyone!

  • driving smoothly can reduce fuel consumption – check the road ahead, anticipate traffic and avoid harsh acceleration and braking
  • shift to a higher gear at the right time – shift up at 2500rpm for petrol cars and 2000rpm for diesel cars. A vehicle travelling at 37mph in third gear uses 25 per cent more fuel than it would at the same speed in fifth gear
  • get in and go – modern engines are designed to be most efficient when you just get in and go. Keeping the engine running or pumping the accelerator wastes fuel, increases engine wear and increases emissions
  • switch your engine off if you know you won’t be moving for a while
  • check your tyre pressures regularly – under-inflated tyres can increase your fuel consumption by up to three per cent
  • stick to the speed limits - at 70mph you could be using up to 30 per cent more fuel than at 50mph
  • remove unnecessary weight and roof racks – they increase the weight and air resistance so they increase the amount of fuel you use
  • air conditioning and other on-board electrical devices (like mobile phone chargers) increase fuel consumption, so only use them when necessary
I have read elsewhere on the net that using your air conditioning doesn’t actually affect fuel consumption massively.  If you have any information on this get in touch.
I’ve just taken everything out of my boot (except the spare tyre) so we’ll see what a difference taking on board this information makes to my fuel consumption.
