Ethical and Green Christmas presents

It’s the first of December, the Christmas decorations are out, Christmas music is playing on the radio and we only have a few weeks left to do our shopping.

This year Ethical and Green have been trying to buy as many ethical presents as possible.  With the likes of Ethical Superstore, Big Green Idea and a majority of companies trying to go green, it’s easier than ever.  Recently we discovered that Oxfam have a great selection of novel presents for people.  These include sponsoring goats and donkeys in Africa! Hurrah!
Elephant Dung Gift Ideas

Big Green Smile are now doing a free Christmas wrapping service.  They have some really interesting gifts like elephant dung stationery- we’ve been assured it doesn’t smell!!  Another favourite is the Robert’s solar radio.  It comes in a range of great colours and you can attach your iPod as well.

If you need some festive chocolate Green and Blacks is the best organic chocolate in the world.  The Ethical and Green favourite is the almond milk chocolate.  Thank goodness diets start after Christmas!

Big Green Smile for Christmas

Merry Christmas

Big Green Smile has a Christmas wrapping service this year. Here is some information from the company about what they are doing for the environment.  If only all companies followed their lead!

Carbon Offsetting and Gift Wrapping at BigGreenSmile.com

BGS has teamed up with Climate Care* to allow customers to contribute towards offsetting carbon that is released during the delivery of their goods with the aim of helping reduce the damage caused by global greenhouse emissions.

Ben Wigley of BGS said, “We consider the environment throughout our business; from the products we source to their delivery, the running of our warehouse, and now carbon offsetting. We recognise that carbon is released as a side-effect of us delivering orders and expect this initiative to contribute to addressing climate change.”

The site now also offers a gift wrapping service. Presents will arrive wrapped in a high-quality, coloured paper made from Lokta paper**, together with a hand written card. If more than one item is ordered, they will be sent in a gift-wrapped box and the items inside will not be wrapped. The invoice included with the package will omit prices.

Ben added, “In the lead up to Christmas we are hoping that customers will take advantage of this excellent time-saving, green wrapping service. Not only will we ensure gifts are delivered beautifully wrapped, but because we use Lokta paper, it also helps preserve the fragile eco system in Nepal and gives regular, fairly paid work to the people of the region.”

Happy Energy Saving Christmas

Notes

*Climate Care is an organisation that reduces global greenhouse gas emissions on behalf of companies and individuals. These reductions are made through a range of projects around the world that not only make real reductions in carbon emissions, but also make a difference to people’s lives and 100% of the carbon offsetting payment go.

** Lokta paper is made from the bark of the Lokta, or Daphne papyracea plant.  Lokta grows in the Himalayas at altitudes in excess of 6500ft and is abundant in supply.  Harvesting lokta helps preserve the fragile eco system in Nepal and gives regular fairly paid work to the people of the many mountain villages.

Online Christmas cards for charity

Have an issue sending out paper Christmas cards?  Worried about the trees and the cost to the environment?  Well fear no more.  Ethical and Green have found out about online charity Christmas cards saving on paper and allowing you to support the charity of your choice.  Great!  Here is some information from Everyclick.com:

The aim of the campaign is to get people to substitute paper Christmas cards with an online greeting. There’s a number of reasons why this is a great campaign including: it saves on time (dead quick and easy), it saves on waste (xmas cards generate up to 20,000 tonnes a year!), and it lets you donate to charity rather than spending money in a shop. Even better, you can choose which charity you want to give to, or you can let the person your sending the greeting to choose one they like!

Cut the crap this Christmas

Save time, save waste, keep Christmas.

Be part of Everyclick’s Considerate Christmas 2008: send your Christmas greetings online, save waste and help raise money for charity.

Since I became part of Considerate Christmas 2008, the other reindeer have stopped laughing at me and calling me names. Everyclick rocks.

I Queue?

Would you rather spend the festive period at the pub or in the post-office queue? Thought so. Sending your Christmas greetings though Everyclick will save you ‘valuable’ time. Cheers.

In the (Saint) Nick of time?

Is Christmas shopping a last minute activity for you? If so, it’s probably pretty stressful. Unless you give through Everyclick that is, which you can do from your sofa on Christmas Eve. Or get them sorted now and choose a date nearer the big day to send them.

Goodwill not landfill?

With Everyclick, you give something meaningful to your friends and family, and help out one of 200,000 UK charities at the same time. What’s more, you’ll do your bit to keep 20,000 tons of waste from landfill.* Goodwill all round!

Spread your cheer now!

Christmas? Considerate done.

Christmas at Marks and Spencer

A while ago we reported how Marks and Spence had implemented Plan A- their environmental policy. 12 months on and M&S are doing really well with their plans. If you have been into their stores you will notice that they now have bags for life and are charging 5p for each plastic bag you need. By doing this they have managed to cut down on their plastic bag usage which is great for the environment.

Marks and Spencer’s CO2 emissions have also been reduced by 55 000 tonnes in the last 12 years. They are supporting farmers who are investing in renewable energy and have opened 3 eco-stores! Marks and Spencer’s are setting a great example to other high street stores.

So if you want to support the environment take a look at the M&S Christmas shop. They are currently offering free delivery on orders over £30. Included in the Christmas store are their Christmas hampers which make a great present. As always M&S lingerie makes an excellent present. With Fairtrade cotton now being sold and more support for suppliers M&S clothing make a great green present.

Worried about the credit crunch? At the moment M&S are offering 3 for the price of 2 on Christmas gifts. What are you waiting for?
