Haiti Earthquake

Please read the correspondence Ethical and Green received regarding an appeal for the Haiti earthquake that has taken so many lives.  Any donation you can make would be greatly appreciated.

Redeem calls on UK to help save Haitian lives by donating old mobile phones

Recycling expert, Redeem plc, is urging the UK public to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake by donating old mobile phones and inkjet cartridges to its emergency Haiti Recycling Appeal. All money raised from the campaign will go directly towards charities undertaking disaster relief in Haiti.

As the devastating impact of the earthquake which struck near Port-au-Prince on Tuesday becomes apparent, it is predicted that it could have affected up to 3 million people in Haiti.  For the organisations mounting relief efforts there is a huge financial pressure to fund aid missions and the Haiti Recycling Appeal is pledging to help support this.

With an estimated 90 million mobile phones thought to be lying around in homes across the UK, Redeem is urging people to send old mobile phones and inkjet cartridges, in any condition, to a freepost address or arrange for free collections. The products will all be recycled to raise funds to go towards helping the hundreds of thousands of Haitian people who desperately need aid.

Jamie Rae, chief executive of Redeem Plc, commented: “This catastrophic earthquake has had the most appalling impact on the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the people of Haiti need our help more than we can imagine. In the UK we have contributed huge sums to previous disaster funds, and also regularly donate vast amounts to charitable organisations every year. We recognise that across the country we are still dealing with a very tough economic climate, so we wanted to offer an alternative way for people to donate to the disaster relief. By donating old products through our freepost appeal, such as mobile phones and printer cartridges, will help raise absolutely vital funds for the people of Haiti.

“We support over 200 charities each year, offering them a much needed fundraising mechanism. With a very robust collection system in place we have the capacity to quickly set up and run a successful fundraising campaign. People can either send products to our freepost address or can ask friends, family or colleagues to get involved and arrange for a free collection. We ask that people across the UK get involved and support the Haiti Recycling Appeal.”

It is really easy to do – any mobile phone or printer cartridge (excluding Epson cartridges) can be sent freepost to Haiti Recycling Appeal, Freepost NAT 20539, Falkirk, FK2 9BR. If you have more than ten phones or printer cartridges to donate a free courier collection can be arranged simply by calling 08451 302 010.

Green ideas for shipping containers

The Dutch firm Cargoshell has designed a collapsable shipping container made of lighter materials that can be flat packed.  This means that one lorry can transport three or four containers as opposed to one therefore saving millions of gallons of fuel and consequently the emissions that go with them.

Data centres convert heat into electricity

The technology boom and rise of the internet has lead to for data centres that house computer servers.  These are vital to power the digital economy and keep us logged on.  However as you can imagine the consume a vast amount of electricity.  In fact some data centres use as much electricity as a small town!!  Those of you who know about computers will have noted that not only do the computers need power to work they also need energy to cool them down.

The company Telecity realised it was pumping a lot of hot air into the atmosphere and when designing its new data centre in Paris it coupled with a company to take away its heat.  The French national agronomic institute built a greenhouse next to the data centre that will allow scientist to study how plants adapt to global warming.  In Amsterdam the waste heat is used to warm an office block and heat the water supply of a hospital.

Telecity estimate that the data centre will save 2500 tonnes of CO2 each year.  They will also have a white roof to reflect solar rays and therefore stop the sun heating the building.

So there we have an example of how a company has looked at their waste and come up with a solution to help other businesses.  Good stuff!  Hopefully Telecity will act as an example to other companies about how to cut their CO2 emissions.

Car share schemes take off as councils get on board

This week saw the launch of designated car share scheme places in local car parks.  For the first time councils are offering designated parking spaces for those car sharing.  Councils have linked up with local car share schemes to offer the places.

Not only does car sharing help the environment by cutting down on the number of cars on the road but it also helps the wallet.  By car sharing it eliminates the need to own a car or at the very least cuts down on the amount of money spent on petrol.  We all know how much petrol costs these days!

So why not get in touch with your local council or check out your local car share scheme and see if you can cut your CO2 emissions and save money this year.  liftshare offer a car share scheme.  Their web address is www.liftshare.com

Obama to blame for failure at Copenhagen?

Just when the talks at the Copenhagen seemed to be on track for at least some form of agreement the American President turns up.  In what should have been the Americans arriving to help cement the agreements on CO2 levels Obama managed to enrage the Chinese envoy.

In a thinly veiled attack on the Eastern powers Barrak Obama single handedly stopped the summit.  Having thought that Obama represented hope after George Bush’s ignorance on climate change it appears that this was not the case.  Yet again America puts the world’s health on the line.  Copenhagen was a chance to make significant steps towards cutting CO2 emissions.  Other countries appeared to be willing to compromise and negotiate for the good of the planet.  Regrettably this was not to be…..

2010: A greener year?

Ethical and Green has been very quiet for the past few months due to some changes that will be happening.
The end of 2009 did not quite go to plan for those of us interested in green issues. We were hoping for significant steps to be made towards legislation on climate change. However the Copenhagen talks did not go to plan. We all know who were the guilty parties in this matter……However we must move on.
As the governments of the world seem unable to help in our plight against global warming the steps we can take as individuals are even more important.
Ethical and Green’s New Year resolution is to offer practical advice about how individuals can reduce their carbon footprint without having to break the bank. We will build on the work we have already done and hope to get more of you concerned with environmental issues involved. Let us know what your resolutions are this year as well.  Email us at ethicalandgreen@gmail.com
Happy New Year!!
